It’s incredible to think the Ford Focus originally launched 20 years ago in 1998; then its new edge design made everything instantly dated overnight, it was a hoot to drive, and it was well made. Now two decades on Ford is trying to recapture that spirit and also make the Ford Focus the best-in-class meet the new mark ford.
Ford has a clear goal with this mark full focus it has to be the best family hatchback to drive, have the type of space as a match for a civic, the fit and finish of golf, and the funny for money of a good old Ford. I’ll leave it up to you on where the ford has exceeded in the looks department though the record I think the design is a bit too safe.
2018 For Focus Interior
But what car has a wacky interior in this class, now it’s a world away from the old Mark threes haphazard dashboard layouts, and it looks slick very smart, and it’s nicely put together. But more than a little bit later on now every car is dominated by a screen on the entry-level it has a tiny 4.5-inch display which looks pretty nasty.
But the next level up the z-tech has a six-inch screen it has Fords SYNC three infotainment system and comes a standard with apple carplay and android auto. Higher up the range, you get an 8-inch screen as we’ve got, but both screens have sync three, and it’s a system that works quite well. It’s not the best system in the world to use, but it’s perfectly adequate for this type of car one thing I do particularly like is the fact it’s positioned quite high up, so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road too much to operate.
Another nice touch are the climate controls now there are actual physical controls. Not like in the Peugeot 308 where you have to bury yourself in the menus, it’s very easy to use on the move.
Well, it’s pretty good it’s not VW Golf levels, but it’s not too far off. Honestly, lots of nice soft-touch plastics nice bits of trim like fake metal trim it all looks very nice indeed there are a few scratching plastics further down, but you can say that for most cars in this class.
One thing that has been pinched from the VW Golf are the flock lined door pockets just a nice feeling of quality and the door pockets are large enough for a large water bottle which is nice.
Talking a storage where there’s a cubby under which little removable shelf has a USB charging port and a pen holder, a couple of cup holders they’re adjustable so you can adjust the space to your liking the space is actually worth mentioning because Ford has removed the handbrake and put an electronic and the glove box is of a pretty good size.
The range is pretty simple there’s an entry-level style which gets 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, DAB radio with Bluetooth, and also both two autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assistance. But it doesn’t get the large touchscreen and sync 3. Z tech gets sync three cruise control and a heated windscreen, while titanium trim like our car gets an 8-inch screen, heated front seats, climate control, keyless entry and start, and all-around parking sensors. Titanium X adds part leather, and then there’s the posh version with it leather seats, LED headlights, a head-up display, and a piano plays stereo.
Now the full mark focus is based on a brand new platform it’s much longer than the old Ford Focus, and that means you get a real benefit in terms of interior space. I mean I’ve got that huge amount more knee room, a lot more than the old Ford Focus and Headroom is pretty good too.
The one excellent thing about the new Focus is the fact you can fit three people back, and you won’t be squabbling four-foot space because there’s a pretty much a flat floor down there which is nice. We’ve got a cup holder where a couple of cup holders in this armrest it’s a nice height too so you can sit back there and relax, the door pockets are a pretty good size as a while we’ve got nets in the back of the seat. There’s a couple of things that I don’t particularly like though there’s no ventilation back here, at all there’s only one 12 volt socket which is a bit of shame be nice a couple of USB points thrown in as well.
The other thing I don’t particularly and the Isofix point. Yes, you do get a set of them in either out of the seat, but the little covers are cheap and brittle so you’ll probably take those out and end up just throwing the way if you’ve got children. The other point I want to make is if you are carrying children back here you’re loading in child seats. Yes, the doors do open pretty wide but there’s a lot of cheap plastic on the sides, and that’s going to get scratched very easily.
While the focus is one the longest cars in its class that extra length is boosted interior space, not the boot. It’s just average in here, it’s smaller than the golf with the seats up but larger than the golf with the seats down, but both are trumped by the Skoda Octavia. However, there are no clever touches like dividers or extra storage which is a bit of a shame.
2018 Ford Focus Performance
We’ve got the most powerful 1 liter, the one with 123 brake horsepower. If you keep this engine spinning above around 2,300 rpm, if a reward you with pretty punchy progress and it makes pretty nice noise as well. Now this engine is at its best when booting around town because you can take advantage of that punch and also when it’s on the motorway because it’s surprisingly quiet and refined.
There’s a choice of a 6-speed manual or a brand new 8-speed automatic gearbox. The auto has a Jaguar style knob to change between gears, but it’s the 6-speed manual that’s the sweetest filling slick and precise. Like the new A-class, the focus comes with a torsion bar or a more sophisticated multi-link rear suspension setup. That multi-link is more comfortable and makes the car more agile, but our car had the torsion beam, and it was supple enough. In fact, a few buyers will ever know the difference.
